Welcome back for a bigger and better 2017.

This year is all about the ‘new’. We have new Student Learning Leaders, new House Captains and new Homegroup Representatives. This year, Hollows will also welcome two new Year 7 classes. These 49 new students have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to our learning team, and should aim to follow the example of existing, more experienced Hollows students.

2017 promises to be an exciting year, and we look forward to recognising the contributions and achievements of our students and staff. Term One promises to be busy with key events including:

  • Hollows 2016 Awards Presentation (February 16, 9AM, Leisure Centre)
  • Meet the Homegroup Teacher (February 16, 3.30-6PM)
  • Swimming Carnival (February 21)
  • Year 7 Camp (March 20-22)

Hollows Learning Team – Who are we? Who are we named after?

Each learning team at Berwick College is named after people that had made a difference in various fields. Our team is named after Fred Hollows to recognise the wonderful difference that he made to so many. In his time as a humanitarian and eye surgeon, Fred Hollows helped restore eyesight to thousands of people in Australia and overseas.

“I believe the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other.”
– Fred Hollows

Hollows Fundraising

A very important part of being involved in a learning team at Berwick College is the community service aspect. In 2009 Learning Team Hollows launched the Change for Change Appeal, which aimed to raise money for The Fred Hollows Foundation. We made a pledge that we would raise at least $125 each year in an effort to change the lives of 5 people through the hard work of the Fred Hollows Foundation.

In 2015, we raised $318. In 2016 our Hollows team members attempted a mammoth feat, climbing the equivalent distance and incline of Mount Everest (four times!!) using the stairs of the college. The students aimed to raise $25 each to help cure the needlessly blind. As a team we raised $870. Students sourced sponsorship donations from friends and family and raised the money independently. This was a truly amazing achievement by the team and each and every student should be proud of their efforts. We can proudly say that last year we saved the sight of 32 people. This year we are setting even bigger targets. We want every student in our learning team involved and raising money for such a fantastic organisation.
