Hollows Learning Team

Each learning team at Berwick College is named after people that have made a difference in various fields. Our team is named after Fred Hollows to recognise the wonderful difference that he made to so many. In his time as a humanitarian and eye surgeon, Fred Hollows helped restore eyesight to thousands of people in Australia and overseas.

“I believe the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other.”

Hollows Fundraising

A very important part of being involved in a learning team at Berwick College is the community service aspect. The Hollows learning team aims to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. The money raised contributes to curing the needlessly blind. In 2015, the team raised $318. In 2016, the team improved their fundraising to raise $870.

2017 was absolutely incredible. Our team dedicated a week to our fundraising and our students climbed the equivalent distance and incline of Mount Everest five times. They did this by climbing up and down the biggest set of stairs in the school (all in the name of charity). When we combined our Everest Climb fundraising and our Hollows Day fundraising (which included food stalls and a blindfolded basketball knockout competition to highlight the difficulties of visual impairment) we raised an amazing $3200 as a team. Students sourced sponsorship donations from friends and family and raised the money independently. This was a truly amazing achievement by the team and each and every student should be proud of their efforts. We can proudly say that last year we saved the sight of 128 people. This year we are setting even bigger targets. We want every student in our learning team involved and raising money for such a fantastic organisation.
